Requirements
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
If you are considering building a Diving Career at the Central African Diving Institute (CADI), the
following minimum requirements have to be met:
1.1 AGE
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. If under 18, an applicant must have parental
consent, and be 18 years old by the expected graduation date.
1.2 EDUCATION
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or a recognized equivalent.
1.3 LANGUAGE
All students must have communicable proficiency in English (speaking, reading and writing),
understand written and verbal communications in English and be able to communicate with other
people.
1.4 SWIMMING COMPETENCE
Competence will be demonstrated by completing 300-meter freestyle swim and breath hold for a
minimum of 20 seconds, swim 25m underwater, recover an object from 5m underwater and tread
water for 1 minute.
NB: Applicants Lacking Swimming Competence requirement will be required to take and
pass our Pro Swimming Training course before they commence Dive Training.
1.5 EXPERIENCE
Prior dive experience is not required. Applicants must be experienced swimmers and be
comfortable in the water.
Ideal candidates have a positive attitude, a high mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work
safely and effectively in a team environment.
1.6 DIVING MEDICAL FITNESS
Diving fitness looks at your ability:
• to perform diving work,
• your endurance to continue work load under extreme environments a
➢ Diving Fitness will be Attested by a valid, in-date commercial diving medical certificate
performed by a qualified doctor.
Applicants will need to pass a thorough medical examination by an Approved Medical Examiner of
Divers (AMED), before starting training to ensure they are medically fit to dive.
The AMED also needs to make you aware of any underlying health problems, which could affect your
fitness in the future.
If you pass the medical you will be issued with a certificate of medical fitness to dive, which is valid for
up to 12 months.
This must be renewed annually and will include a fitness test.
1.7 DISQUALIFYING MEDICAL CONDITIONS
There are certain disqualifying medical conditions that will prevent you from passing the ADCI
dive physical.
Disqualifying Conditions per the Association of Diving Contractors International (ADCI)
➢ History of seizure disorder other than early childhood febrile (high fever) conditions
➢ Significant anxiety, panic disorder and claustrophobia.
➢ Cystic or cavitary disease of the lungs, significant obstructive or restrictive lung disease, or
spontaneous pneumothorax.
➢ Chronic inability to equalize sinus and middle ear pressure.
➢ Significant central or peripheral nervous system disease or impairment.
➢ Chronic alcoholism, drug abuse, or history of psychosis.
➢ Significant hemoglobinopathies.
➢ Significant malignancies.
➢ Grossly impaired hearing.
➢ Chronic conditions requiring continuous control by medication.
➢ Obesity.
The following medical conditions are likely to prevent you from diving or restrict the type of diving that you do:
➢ Disease of the heart and circulation, including high blood pressure, angina, chest pains and
palpitations
➢ Collapsed lung/pneumothorax
➢ Other chest problems or lung disease
➢ Ear, nose, throat or sinus problems
➢ Persistent stomach or intestinal problems
➢ Mental illness
➢ Epilepsy or childhood convulsions
➢ Claustrophobia or severe motion sickness
➢ Severe migraines
➢ Disease of the brain or nervous system such as strokes or multiple sclerosis
➢ Blackouts or recurring fainting
➢ Injury or surgery to the head or spine
➢ Skin problems
➢ Blood disorders
➢ Diabetes
➢ Asthma
➢ Pregnancy – A diver who is pregnant or who suspects she may be pregnant should not dive
